The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for Delhi, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by light rain in isolated areas during the day, offering some relief from the prevailing heat.Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees above normal, at the Safdarjung observatory. Among other stations, Palam and Lodhi Road recorded minimum temperatures of 25.8 degrees Celsius, while Ridge and Ayanagar registered 25.2 degrees Celsius.The IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of around 38 degrees Celsius in the national capital. Air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 118.Meanwhile, weather conditions across Punjab and Chandigarh are expected to remain partly cloudy, with chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rain over some areas on Wednesday and Thursday as pre-monsoon activity continues in north India.The weather department has indicated that intermittent cloud cover and gusty winds could provide relief from the recent spell of intense heat.In Chandigarh, temperatures are likely to hover between 22°C and 38°C over the next two days, with warm daytime conditions persisting despite the possibility of isolated showers.Across Punjab, residents can expect partly cloudy skies with localised thunderstorm activity in some districts, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.Weather experts say the pre-monsoon conditions may help keep maximum temperatures in check compared to last week’s heatwave conditions.The IMD has advised people to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and follow local weather updates, especially in areas prone to strong winds and lightning.
