IMD predicts more rain, thunderstorms in Punjab, Haryana

Amidst the ongoing heatwave across north-west India, light rainfall was experienced in some districts of Punjab and at isolated places in Haryana over the past 24 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has further predicted the possibility of light rain at a few places in Punjab on May 23 and in both the states on May 28.Faridkot, Ferozepur, Gusdarpur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Pathankot and Nawanshahar were among districts in Punjab that received varying amounts of rain. The highest amount of rainfall during the past 24 hours was 3.5 mm in Faridkot, followed by 2 mm in Ferozepur and 1.8 mm in Gurdaspur.Light to moderate rainfall is expected at isolated places over Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahar and Ropar on May 23, according to a bulletin issued by the IMD on May 22. Dust storms and thunderstorm along with lightning, gusty winds are also likely at isolated places in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur and Ropar on May 23.The rainfall for the month of May so far is below the long period average (LPA) by 24 per cent in Punjab, where as it is above the LPA by 11 per cent in Haryana. The seasonal rainfall since March 1 is above the LPA by 23 per cent in Haryana and 9 per cent in Punjab.Over the past 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature recoded in Punjab was 44 degrees Celsius and the lowest minimum temperature was 22.3 degrees Celsius at Thein Dam. The day temperatures in the state was above normal at some places by up to 3.2 degrees, while the night temperatures were above normal by up to 4 degrees.In Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was 45.3 degrees Celsius at Rohtak and the lowest minimum temperature was 22.4 degrees Celsius, also at Rohtak. Day temperatures in the state was above normal at some places by up to 4.9 degrees, while the night temperatures were above normal by up to 3.9 degrees.The IMD has cautioned about severe heatwave conditions at many places in Haryana and at a few places in Punjab till at least May 28. No large change in maximum temperatures is expected during the next seven days over north-west India and strong surface winds with speed up to 40 kmph are likely to prevail over Punjab and Haryana during this period.According to the IMD, a western disturbance lies over north Pakistan and its neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh and its neighbourhood, while an upper air cyclonic circulation over Punjab and its neighbourhood has become less marked.Under the influence of these systems, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds is likely over Jammu and Kashmir till May 25 and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on May 23. Isolated hailstorm activity is also possible over Himachal Pradesh on May 23.
