India and China reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and expressed satisfaction over continued peace and tranquility in the border areas, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.Both sides also agreed to maintain regular diplomatic and military-level engagement to further improve bilateral relations, the ministry added.The discussions between the two sides took place during the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs held in Beijing on Wednesday.The latest round of talks is being seen as part of sustained diplomatic efforts by both countries to preserve border stability while cautiously rebuilding bilateral engagement in other sectors.The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (East Asia) Sujit Ghosh, while the Chinese side was headed by Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department Director General Hou Yanqi.MEA officials said the talks were “constructive and forward looking”, with both countries reviewing developments in the border areas and acknowledging progress made in maintaining stability along the frontier.“The two sides expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas, which has enabled progress towards gradual normalisation of bilateral relations,” the MEA said.The meeting assumes significance as New Delhi and Beijing continue efforts to stabilize ties after the military standoff in eastern Ladakh that had severely strained relations between the two neighbours.During the discussions, the two sides deliberated on issues relating to boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism building and cross-border cooperation. The Indian side also stressed the need for an early meeting of the next Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-Border Rivers, an important platform for cooperation on sharing hydrological data and related issues.Both countries agreed to maintain regular exchanges and contacts through existing diplomatic and military mechanisms, including those decided during the 24th round of Special Representatives’ talks held earlier.The two sides also agreed to work jointly towards substantive preparations for the next meeting of the Special Representatives (SR), which is scheduled to be held in China.During the visit, Ghosh also met Liu Jinsong, Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and paid a courtesy call on Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.
