India on Friday said that it is examining Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, signalling that the sensitive issue is being processed through established legal and judicial channels even as New Delhi seeks to maintain steady diplomatic engagement with Dhaka.Responding to queries during the weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the matter remains under consideration. “The request is currently being examined as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal processes. We will continue to engage constructively on this issue with all stakeholders,” he stated. The remarks come in the backdrop of recent high-level engagements between India and Bangladesh, during which Dhaka is understood to have formally raised the extradition issue. While New Delhi refrained from divulging specifics, the emphasis on “judicial and internal legal processes” indicates that any decision will be guided by treaty obligations, domestic law, and due process considerations. On parallel political developments in Bangladesh — including reported moves to formalise a ban on the Awami League — India adopted a measured stance, avoiding direct comment while reiterating its broader position on bilateral ties.Jaiswal noted that discussions held during the recent visit of Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister had already been detailed in an official readout, and underscored India’s intent to move forward constructively. He said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had conveyed India’s desire to engage with Bangladesh’s current dispensation and deepen cooperation across sectors.“The two sides agreed to explore proposals for strengthening their partnership through relevant bilateral mechanisms, with follow-up official-level meetings expected soon,” he added, pointing to continued dialogue despite emerging complexities.
