India and Indonesia on Tuesday agreed to explore partnership for the integrated development of the strategically located Sabang Port overlooking the Strait of Malacca, while Jakarta will draw on India’s election management expertise to strengthen the use of technology in electoral processes, marking two significant outcomes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia. The Sabang Port cooperation assumes strategic significance as the Indonesian facility is located close to India’s Great Nicobar transshipment port project, with both initiatives positioned near one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints.According to the officials, President Prabowo Subianto welcomed India’s interest in partnering on the integrated development of Sabang Port, covering areas such as cruise and marine tourism facilities, ship repair and shipbuilding, and shore-based services supporting offshore energy activities in the Andaman Sea.The two sides said the partnership would enhance connectivity between India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Indonesia’s Sumatra region, while promoting investment, employment generation and technology transfer. Their authorities will work out the scope, financing and modalities of the project in a time-bound manner. The leaders also welcomed enhanced cooperation between the Election Commission of India and Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU), including through an agreement on management and technology utilisation in elections.Sources said Indonesia is keen to develop an election technology framework suited to its requirements, drawing from India’s experience with electronic voting systems. The cooperation is being seen as a major endorsement of India’s election management capabilities. The two sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals and strategic supply chains. The joint statement highlighted collaboration in rare earths and steel, including a strategic partnership between the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel to explore a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility.Another agreement involving the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre, Midwest Ltd and PT Perusahaan Mineral Nasional will focus on developing rare-earth magnets, a critical component for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and advanced technologies. The outcomes underline the expanding strategic convergence between New Delhi and Jakarta, with maritime security, defence technology, critical minerals and digital cooperation emerging as key areas of the partnership.
