Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Monday said the Centre’s denial of permission for his proposed US visit was against the spirit of federalism and amounted to an “insult to Telangana”.He also accused PM Narendra Modi of “acting as a Gujarati and not as the Prime Minister of India”.Addressing a press conference hours after returning to Hyderabad from his UK visit, the Congress leader claimed his US tour had been blocked for political reasons.“This is not a denial of permission to Revanth Reddy alone. It is an insult to the people of Telangana. It is because of Gujarat supremacy. It is like obstructing Telangana’s development,” he said.Reddy said the decision ran contrary to the principles of cooperative federalism and cited the visits of PM Modi and several CMs, including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, to the US.Accusing the Centre of double standards, Reddy pointed out that Patel had been granted permission to visit the US and Canada from August 17 to 24 to promote investments under the “Vibrant Gujarat” initiative. “The Centre blocked my visit because it feared it would affect Gujarat’s development,” he alleged.Reddy said his proposed US visit was also aimed at promoting investment, education and sports under the ‘Telangana Rising 2047’ initiative.He also dismissed media reports that he had planned meetings with US Vice President JD Vance and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani without informing the Ministry of External Affairs, asserting that the complete itinerary had been shared with the Centre.“One cannot simply walk in and meet a mayor or vice president. Such meetings require prior appointments and clearance through the Indian High Commission,” he said.“This is not a personal insult to Revanth Reddy. It is an injustice to the four crore people of Telangana. Preventing the Telangana Chief Minister from undertaking the visit amounts to obstructing the state’s development. Our MPs will raise the issue in Parliament,” he added.While approving Reddy’s UK visit, the Centre declined political clearance for his proposed US trip on the grounds that the programmes scheduled there were not appropriate to the office he held or the stated purpose of the visit, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.Reddy’s proposed itinerary included visits to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on August 24, followed by engagements at Northeastern University and Virginia Tech in Boston on August 25. He was also scheduled to attend a ‘Meet and Greet’ programme organised by the Indian Overseas Congress (USA) in New York on August 26 before returning to Hyderabad on August 30.
