Even as the US military continued to strike targets in Iran last night, Tehran on Thursday declared the Strait of Hormuz was an inviolable “red line”, warning that any US strike on its infrastructure ordered by President Donald Trump would prompt a retaliatory attack across the entire Gulf region.Iranian Army spokesperson Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia on Thursday said the Strait — which carried about a fifth of global oil and gas shipments before the conflict — was a “red line” for Iran, over which it maintained firm control.“The Americans thought that by attacking some of our bases on the southern coasts of the country, they could take control of this strategic Strait,” Akraminia said.Iran had the ability to exert control over the Strait from every single point of its territory, he added. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has, meanwhile, threatened to halt all energy exports from the West Asia over the US’s naval blockade, which was reimposed on Tuesday.Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a statement saying: “We are in an essential and existential war with America.”The US Military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), tasked to West Asia, said on Thursday it struck several military sites and assets in a bid to “further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten innocent mariners” in the Strait. The unit also said it disabled an oil tanker in the passageway. The CENTCOM said in a statement early on Thursday that air strikes targeted Iranian command centres, air defence sites, missile and drone capabilities as well as coastal surveillance facilities.Multiple locations were hit on Thursday, the CENTCOM said, including Bandar Abbas.Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said it targeted US military assets in neighbouring Gulf countries. Iran’s army claimed retaliatory attacks on US military assets in Kuwait and Bahrain on Thursday. In Bahrain, Iranian drones targeted US Super Hawk radars and Patriot defence systems at the Sheikh Isa airbase. Iraqi authorities have said five drones attacked the city of Erbil, with two crashing near a US base and one shot down near the US consulate. Iran’s army has not claimed the attacks. At least 35 people have died, and more than 300 have been wounded in the latest wave of attacks that began last Wednesday after the CENTCOM launched strikes on Iranian port cities close to the Strait of Hormuz. The US says the attacks were in retaliation for Iran hitting three commercial ships in the Strait.Meanwhile, speaking at the US Army War College in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, President Donald Trump reiterated his claims that Iran was pushing to strike a peace deal behind the scenes but did not provide details. The US Mint will begin producing $1 coins with President Donald Trump’s face on the front as part of its commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday. The design, which also features the words “Liberty”, “In God We Trust” and “1776-2026” on the front and an image of the bald eagle from the presidential seal on the back was a revision from a draft made public in October. The rear face of that design showed Trump holding a raised clenched fist framed with the words “fight, fight, fight”, a reference to the 2024 assassination attempt against him.Trump said he was “honoured”. “They gave me a coin,” he said. “That’s very unusual from what I understand.”US to mint $1 coin with Trump’s face
