Janhvi Kapoor has come under a profusion of condemnation for being objectified brazenly in Buchi Babu’s Peddi. Apparently the producers paid her amply and promised the film would carry forward her mother Sridevi’s legacy of blockbuster Telugu films with Ram Charan’s father Chiranjeevi.Chiranjeevi and Sridevi were one of the most iconic on-screen pairs in Telugu cinema, celebrated for their electrifying chemistry and chart-topping dance numbers. Their most famous collaboration was the 1990 blockbuster Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Jattvibedari. They also co-starred in Mosagadu (1980), Rani Kasula Rangamma (1981), Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Jattvibedari (1990) and S.P. Parasuram (1994).Tragically, after Peddi no one wants to see Sridevi’s daughter and Chiranjeevi’s son together on screen again. Before the release there was much excitement over the pairing. The Peddi producers were planning another film with Janhvi and Ram Charan. The project has been quietly dropped after the audiences’ response to the lead pair in Peddi.And it is not entirely Jahnvi’s fault. Janhvi is in Peddi for no more than 15 minute. During this time she is shown dressed in the skimpiest of cholis and ghagras, heaving and thrusting her bosom at the hero and the camera.Her performance is not only loud, it is lewd. Ram Charan ogles at her from every angle with lustful intent.A Hindi filmmaker known for his heightened aesthetic sense and for projecting his heroines as screen goddesses, feels Janhvi needs to slow down. “She is lovely. But no one can be Sridevi, not even her daughter. To expect her to live up to her mother’s standards is really unfair on her. What they have done to her in this film (Peddi) is unforgivable. Her costumes, expressions, body language are all very old school oomph. This is not her fault. She needs to step back and just take it easy. Telugu cinema is not her scene.”
