KONNIE Huq has made a rare public appearance – after largely stepping out of the TV spotlight.

The former Blue Peter presenter turned children’s author appeared at the third ever Kids Aloud initiative at The Foundling Museum in London.

Run by charity Art Fund the initiative encourages family and children to attend galleries and museums during the summer holidays.

‘It is really important to get our kids interested in the arts and ignite their passion for learning at a young age,” Konnie told the Press Association on Thursday.

“Most of us parents know what it’s like, having a lot of time to kill and bored children on your hands.”

Konnie continued: “The worries that parents have are that their kids will be loud or disruptive or disturb other people – but people know it’s the summer holidays.”

Sixty museums across the UK will participate and will have allocated hours for families to attend where children can express themselves freely and to host special events.

Konnie holds the record for the longest-running female host of Blue Peter from 1997 until 2008.

She also worked on various television series and radio programmes including The Xtra Factor, King of Nerds and The One Show.

In 2020 she took her first step into children’s literature as writer and illustrator.

Her book, Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World, highlights the importance of learning through the adventures of a young Bangladeshi girl named Cookie Haque.

Konnie is married to English screenwriter Charlie Brooker, best known for creating the dystopian Netflix series, Black Mirror.

They tied the knot in 2010 at Las Vegas’ Little White Wedding Chapel after dating for nine months.

The couple has two children Covey, 10, and Huxley, nine.
