Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, along with other accused in the Kotkapura firing case, appeared before the Chandigarh court on Tuesday.Badal and other accused appeared before the court following the order of the Additional Sessions Judge, Faridkot.The Faridkot court, in its order dated May 2, directed all the accused to appear before the Chandigarh court on May 12 as per directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.The Faridkot court in its order stated that in view of the order passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 9, the trials of cases regarding FIR dated August 7, 2018 under Sections 307, 323, 341, 201, 218, 120-B and 34 IPC and Section 27, 57, 59 Arms Act and Sections 119, 109, 153, 295-A, 324, 427, 504 IPC at Police Station City Kotkapura, and FIR dated October 14, 2015 under Sections 307, 353, 332, 333, 323, 382, 435, 283, 120-B, 148, 149 IPC and Sections 3, 4, 25, 54, 59 Arms Act and Section 3 & 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, PS City Kotkapura, have been transferred to the Sessions Court, Chandigarh for trial along with case FIR dated October 21, 2015.The High Court passed the order while acting on petitions filed by two accused police officers, who sought transfer of trial in these FIRs, arguing that other linked cases had already been transferred by the High Court and the Supreme Court to Chandigarh.The Kotkapura police firing incident occurred on October 14, 2015, following sacrilege incidents at gurdwaras in Bargari and Burj Jawahar Singh Wala villages in June and September 2015.Police reportedly opened fire on protesters demonstrating against the sacrilege incidents. While the simultaneous firing at Behbal Kalan resulted in two deaths, the Kotkapura incident left several people injured. Apart from other police officials, former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini is also one of the accused in the cases.
