The West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari-led state Cabinet in its very first meeting today cleared the proposal to transfer land to the BSF to complete the fencing of the Indo-Bangladesh border.Bengal shares a 2,216.7 km border with Bangladesh — the longest among all states. Of this 569 km is unfenced with the Cabinet today saying that the process of transfer would be concluded in 45 days.At the start of the meeting, the Cabinet praised the voters of Bengal and the Election Commission for a fear and violence-free election and paid tribute to 321 BJP workers whose sacrifices, the CM said, “made the BJP win possible.”Among other decisions today was Bengal joining the Ayushman Bharat scheme, PM Jan Arogya Yojana, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, PM Vishwakarma Yojana and Ujjwala Yojana.The erstwhile TMC dispensation had not joined these central schemes with estimates that 8.65 lakh Vishwakarma applications and one crore Ujjwala applications were either blocked or pending.Adhikari also approved the immediate implementation of new criminal laws in Bengal and said he was surprised to learn that the Constitution had been violated.“Rules for Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) must be framed immediately. We were surprised to note that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) had not been implemented in Bengal,” Adhikari said.In another major decision announced earlier by Home Minister Amit Shah, the Cabinet approved a five-year upper-age relaxation for recruitment aspirants who had been wronged due to missing out on recruitment cycles earlier. This means general category candidates can apply for jobs till 45 years instead of 40, and SC, ST and OBCs till 48 years instead of 43.This relaxation was a poll promise of the BJP after prospective teachers flagged loss of precious years for job application following a Supreme Court cancellation of the entire state School Service Commission 2016 recruitment panel last year on grounds of corruption.Suvendu Adhikari today also noted that Census-related work in Bengal would begin immediately.Bengal Chief poll Officer named Chief SecyWest Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal, a 1990-batch IAS officer of Bengal cadre, who helmed the EC-mandated SIR in the state, was on Monday appointed the state Chief Secretary. Incumbent Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala will be the new Principal Resident Commissioner, New Delhi.
