THE M56 has been shut near a major airport following a multi-vehicle crash causing one car to catch fire.
Emergency services have rushed to the M56 in Cheshire near Manchester Airport and closed the road eastbound between J7 Bowden Interchange and J6 Hale Four Seasons Interchange.
The road was shut early this morning as the crash caused one car to overturn and another to become engulfed in flames.
Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service have raced to the scene.

Due to the severity of the crash, the road surface and barriers need to be inspected before other vehicles can use the motorway.
There is currently two miles of congestion with those heading to Manchester Airport advised to allow extra time for their journey.

A national highways spokesperson said: “The M56 eastbound between J7 and J6 near Manchester Airport is being closed following a two-car collision.
“One of the cars has overturned. The other car has caught fire.
“The collision has resulted in infrastructure damage.
“National Highways contractors are being despatched to scene to inspect the nearside barrier and road surface as well as support in implementing the closure of the motorway.
“Current delays of 20 mins on approach and two miles of congestion.”
