A FATHER and son allegedly armed with a machete and metal pole attacked an arsonist after he torched his car and rammed into their home, a court has heard.

The Sayers family were at home when Walton Patterson, 38, rammed his Range Rover into their restaurant downstairs and set the car ablaze in Newcastle last year.

But Patterson was cornered by the John Henry Sayers, 62, and his son John Henry Sayers Junior, 29, who left him requiring hospital treatment for fractured wrists and ribs, with cuts to his head and spleen.

Jurors were shown CCTV footage of the “shocking” events, showing the Range Rover being reversed twice into the diner before the driver fled the scene.

Matthew Bean, KC, prosecuting, told the Old Bailey: “At this point, the recovered footage shows the two defendants walking out of ‘Lou’s Diner’ via a side door.

“Both are armed. John Sayers senior has a machete. John Sayers Junior has what may be described as a long metal pole.

“As they walk around to the front of the property, Walter Patterson sets fire to the Range Rover.

“At this point, the prosecution say, both defendants then attacked Mr Patterson with their weapons.

“The footage shows that John Sayers senior, who had been in front of the two men after having struck Walter Patterson at least twice with the machete, paused his attack to go around to the front of the Range Rover, leaving his son John Sayers junior, to repeatedly strike Walter Patterson as he lay on the ground.”

Jurors were told it is accepted Patterson was involved in a “serious criminal offence” by “deliberately targeting” the Sayers family that evening at around 7:30pm.

After the initial blows against Patterson, footage shows Sayers Snr putting the car into gear to send it across the road into a fence.

Patterson returned to his feet and was chased down the road by Sayers Jnr and later Sayers Snr.

“As a result of the assault you have just watched, Walter Patterson suffered a series of serious injuries, including wounds to his left forearm that were so deep they damaged the tendons and fractures to two bones in the left forearm and to his ribs,” added Mr Bean.

The court also heard that the incident was the latest in a series of targeted attacks on the family in recent years, reports ChronicleLive.

Sayers was also reportedly told to drop the machete which he refused to do resulting in him being tasered by the police.

The prosecutor told jurors he did not expect them to have any sympathy for Patterson, who was later convicted of arson.

The Sayers, of Fossway, Newcastle, deny causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place on February 2 last year.

The trial in front of Judge Philip Katz KC continues.
