Daniel Guerrero Martínez, 53, and José Luis Portelas Villegas, 32, set sail on August 13 from Paredón, Mexico to fish in the Pacific Ocean.

The fishermen’s ship, Canaronera, last made radio contact with their fishing cooperative on August 14, 75 miles off the coast of Mexico.

The cooperative sent out a distress signal after the fisherman did not return and they had lost communication with the boat.

The Mexican navy responded to the call with a sea and air rescue operation in the Pacific Ocean.

Three boats also set sail from Paredón to retrace their last known route, but failed to find the men.

Five days later, the navy found the men inside a cool box, 150 miles off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico.

Martinez and Villegas were taken by helicopter to receive medical treatment for severe dehydration.

The fishermen were reunited with their families after undergoing medical exams.

Mexico’s navy said the rescue shows its public commitment “to safeguard human life at sea.”

They encouraged anyone experiencing a maritime emergency to seek aid from the Secretariat of the Navy.

Authorities are investigating what caused the boat to stray from the fishermen’s usual fishing route.

Initial reports suggest that wind and bad weather may have caused the vessel to drift out to sea.

The location and condition of the boat is currently unknown.

Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy said: “The deployment of surface and air units under the Trinomio concept (ship–interceptor–aircraft) made it possible to expand the search, locate the fishermen, bring them to safety and reunite them with their families.”
