Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing will hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, with border security, connectivity projects, economic cooperation and regional stability expected to figure prominently in discussions between the two neighbours.The Myanmar leader arrived in New Delhi on Saturday on a five-day official visit, his first to India in his current capacity, underscoring New Delhi’s continued engagement with a country that occupies a pivotal place in its neighbourhood and Indo-Pacific strategy.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Hlaing shortly after his arrival and signalled India’s intent to further deepen bilateral engagement.“Pleased to call on President U Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar in New Delhi today. Appreciate his positive sentiment towards deepening our longstanding bilateral cooperation. Look forward to his meeting with PM Narendra Modi to advance our partnership for peace, progress and prosperity,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.Hlaing, accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders, will remain in India till June 3. Apart from New Delhi, he will visit Bodh Gaya and Mumbai for business engagements and site visits.The visit comes at a time when India is seeking to accelerate connectivity initiatives linking the North-East with Southeast Asia, while also addressing security concerns along the sensitive India-Myanmar border.The Ministry of External Affairs indicated that all major aspects of the bilateral relationship, including border management, connectivity and economic cooperation, would be discussed during the visit.“All issues that form part of the gamut of relations between Myanmar and India will come up for discussion,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during the weekly media briefing.He described Myanmar as a key neighbour situated at the intersection of India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies, highlighting its strategic importance in New Delhi’s regional outreach.Officials said the two sides would review ongoing cooperation and explore ways to deepen engagement across sectors. A business forum involving industry representatives from both countries is also expected to focus on enhancing trade and investment ties.Myanmar serves as India’s only land bridge to Southeast Asia and remains central to several connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting regional integration. The country also shares a 1,643-km border with four northeastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram — making security cooperation and border management crucial components of bilateral relations.
