A MAJOR ban that is set to impact UK nail salons has come into force today.
The new rule means that certain type of nail polish will be phased out of salons due to health concerns.

The guidelines have been put in place due to the risk associated with a certain chemical ingredient found in gel nail polish.
Varnishes containing the ingredient, known as TPO, are now banned and nail salons will no longer be able to purchase or sell them.

TPO stands for Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide and is the component that allows gel nail varnish to harden under a UV curing lamp.
Studies have suggested that TPO could be harmful to reproductive health and may be linked to long-term fertility issues.

The chemical was banned in the European Union in September 2025 to exhibit “extreme caution” in light of its potential dangers.
The UK has now followed suit, with the phased ban on the use and sale of TPO having begun on August 15.
Manufacturers and importers are no longer be able to sell products containing TPO to the UK market.
As of February 14, 2027, all TPO-based products must be eliminated from UK nail salons.
However, businesses are permitted to use up existing polishes containing TPO until then.
Speaking about the concern surrounding the “reproductive toxin”, Caroline Rainsford, director of science at The CTPA, said: “The reason why TPO has been banned in cosmetic products is based on its hazardous properties, meaning how a substance might behave under a ‘worst-case’ situation, when our bodies are exposed to a very large amount.”
Those worried about how it may affect their next trip to the salon will also be pleased to hear that manufacturers have reformulated gels.
They can now include alternatives like TPO-L or BAPO, which provide similar cure times and a glossy finish.
If you are heading to the salon you should also ensure you wear sun cream on your hands if you are placing them under UV lamps.
