The Patiala police have arrested two drug smugglers and seized 1.7 lakh narcotic pills from their possession near the inter-state Shambhu barrier, SSP Varun Sharma said here on Friday.He said the operation was carried out on a tip-off by a police team working under DSP Daljit Virk of Ghanaur and led by SHO Inspector Swaran Singh of Shambhu police station.The arrested drug smugglers have been identified as Akashdeep Singh alias Kashi, a resident of Rorwal Khurd village in Amritsar district, and Ajaypal Singh alias Ajay, a resident of Manawala Kalan village in Amritsar district.The SSP said a naka was laid near Mehmadpur village close to the Shambhu barrier when a Bolero vehicle coming from the Ambala side was stopped. During the search, the police seized the pills.Sharma said the recovered pills included Tramadol Hydrochloride and Scovidol tablets.A criminal case under the NDPS Act has been registered against them at the Shambu police station.The SSP claimed that Akashdeep was earlier booked under the Arms Act at Tarn Taran police station, while Ajaypal had earlier been booked under the NDPS Act at Rajasansi police station in Amritsar.Investigation is in progress to find out from where they brought the pills and to whom they were likely to deliver these, the SSP added.
