Keir Starmer ducked ALL the tough choices while his successor doesn’t seem to have much of a plan either. There are STILL no concrete proposals to slash eye-watering welfare payments.

In just a few weeks this summer, Burnham has already spent billions on small-change help for families such as £45 off their energy bills and two quid bus fares. The PM also has big plans to deliver radical change in social care — but no clue how to pay for it.

Chancellor John Healey rightly wants to ramp up defence spending. But there are already billions missing from Starmer and Reeves’s Defence Investment Plan which fell way short of what military chiefs were demanding.

Meanwhile, backbench Labour MPs refuse to consider any spending cuts.

It means only one thing: massive tax rises. Unless Burnham finds the courage to stop taxing families and small businesses to the hilt to fund freebies for Benefits Street, nothing will change.

A CLASSIC example of the consequences of Labour’s addiction to tax and spending is the perilous state of our pubs.
