A 36-year-old Indian-origin man from Punjab died in a tragic road accident while working a late evening Uber shift in Papamoa, leaving behind his wife and an 18-month-old daughter.According to New Zealand Police, Ramandeep Dhillon died at the scene after a two-vehicle crash on Te Puke Highway between Bell Road and Poplar Lane last Wednesday evening. Two occupants of the other vehicle were injured.Originally from Punjab, Dhillon had moved to New Zealand on a student visa in 2015. He briefly returned to India in 2024 to marry Veerpal Kaur before the couple settled together in Papamoa, where they worked in kiwifruit orchards. After the birth of their daughter, Kudrat, Dhillon reportedly began driving for Uber for greater flexibility so he could help care for the child.Kaur told local media that the stretch of road where the accident occurred around 7:15 pm was one her husband frequently drove on. Before leaving home that evening, he had spent time with their daughter and told her he would return later for dinner.Concern grew when he stopped answering phone calls. Later that night, police arrived at the family’s home with the devastating news.“I cried, I cried, I cried. I felt that my life is spoilt now,” Kaur told the New Zealand Herald. She described Dhillon as “innocent and loyal” and said he had been overjoyed about becoming a father. Their daughter, she added, continues to ask for him and carries his smile.Dhillon’s funeral held on May 20, was attended by members of the Indian community from across New Zealand. A fundraising campaign has also been launched to support the family with funeral expenses and daily living costs.
