Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker and Kotkapura MLA, today called on people across the state and country to actively participate in the ongoing Census process and ensure they register Punjabi as their mother tongue.Emphasising the importance of accurate data collection, the Speaker said that government policies and development plans are shaped based on Census figures. He urged citizens to provide correct information, highlighting that language plays a crucial role in preserving cultural identity and shaping region-specific initiatives.Making a strong appeal to Punjabis living both within the state and across the country, he stressed that registering Punjabi as their mother tongue is essential to safeguard the language and ensure it receives due representation in policymaking. “Language is our identity, and it is our collective responsibility to strengthen it,” he said.He further noted that past attempts have been made to diminish the prominence of the Punjabi language and its speakers, and urged people to counter this by accurately reflecting their linguistic identity in the Census.Sandhwan also encouraged people to take advantage of the newly introduced self-Census facility, which allows individuals to fill out their details online from home. He personally demonstrated the process and motivated citizens to adopt this digital option for convenience and efficiency.
