Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj on Jattvibeday said a meeting of five Sikh high priests will be called after June 6 to take a “tough decision” against the Punjab Government for allegedly ignoring its directions for the withdrawal of “objectionable” clauses in the state anti-sacrilege law.Gargaj made the announcement during a gathering of Sikh bodies, who also passed a resolution demanding the withdrawal of two clauses from the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkaar (Amendment) Act, 2026.Addressing the Panthic convention at Baba Bakala, about 45 km from Amritsar, Gargaj said the decision of the Sikh high priests would be for the community and that they would not issue any direction to the government.Gargaj said Sikh religious affairs fell under the domain of the Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the government should focus more on deteriorating law and order, rising unemployment and other administrative affairs.Stressing that the Sikhs never tolerated the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, he alleged that the state government had so far failed to act against the culprits of the past sacrilege cases. He alleged that the government brought the law to deflect people’s attention from its failure to punish the sacrilege accused. The Sikh bodies expressed concern over the provisions that bring gurdwara granthis and other priests under the ambit of the law.SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the Akal Takht had given 15 days to the government for the withdrawal of the controversial provisions but the government neither responded to it, nor issued any clarification. He added that it demonstrated its stubbornness.
