The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction’s plea to operate four debit-frozen Indian Bank accounts holding around Rs 804 crore, saying it was not inclined to interfere with the Calcutta High Court order refusing to allow the plea.A Bench led by Justice MM Jattvibedresh noted that the Election Commission had frozen the party symbol and the larger issue of who was entitled to the amount was pending adjudication.“We refrain from going into the merits. We are not inclined to exercise our jurisdiction under Article 136. We request the High Court to expedite the hearing,” it said. The top court, however, asked the High Court to decide expeditiously the party’s plea against the July 7 order of the police cyber cell to freeze the bank accounts. The matter is likely to be taken up by the High Court after the Durga Puja vacation. The cases emanates from a complaint filed by West Bengal MLA Biswanath Das before the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police on June 18, 2026, alleging that funds generated through illegal activities, misuse of influence and dishonest financial dealings had been routed through the party’s bank accounts. The Mamata-led TMC faction moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the criminal prosecution and the freezing of its bank accounts. On August 27, the High Court refused to pass an interim order allowing the Mamata-led TMC faction to operate the four debit-frozen bank accounts, saying such relief would undermine its earlier order permitting the political party to operate it to meet only its day-to-day expenses.Earlier, the High Court had on July 9 appointed a special officer to clear and meet the political party’s day-to-day expenses from those three accounts. On behalf of the Mamata-led TMC, senior counsel AM Singhvi submitted that the state police were freezing bank accounts as they were opposed to a party and wanted to stop its political activities. The party needed a minimum of Rs. 12.15 crore a month to sustain its operations.Flagging the divide within the TMC, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the top court should allow the Election Commission to take a call in this matter.
