A scooter with 96 pending challans worth over a Rs 10-lakh fine was impounded in Gurugram on Tuesday after being tracked by police with the help of challan-issuing device only. Out of 96 pending challans, 95 were issued through online with the help of CCTV cameras installed on the roads of Gurugram.A senior traffic police officer said that as soon as a vehicle’s registration number is entered into the traffic police’s challan-issuing device, the vehicle’s complete record appears in it, including pending challans, insurance and pollution under control (PUC). This enables the police to continuously impound vehicles that have outstanding challans.Also read: Scooter with 96 pending challans worth over Rs10-L fine impounded in Gurugram“This feature is already in the challan-issuing device, but after installation of CCTV cameras, the device gets more data base especially online challans. With the help of the device, we can track all information about vehicle in our challan-issuing device. In addition, the AI-powered smart traffic warning screen, currently functional on a trial basis at Sohna Chowk which display scans vehicle number plates and flashes real-time information on pending challans, expired Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates and registration details as vehicles pass the junction and it is also connected with the challan-issuing device,” said a senior traffic police officer.The traffic police also issued a challan of Rs 21,500 to the owner for the offence of without helmet, without PUC, without driving license, insurance, wrong side driving and dangerous driving.According to the police, the 2017 model scooter owner is Deepika, a resident of New Basti in Gurugram and when the scooter was tracked by the police, her brother Prashant was driving it on the wrong side while going from Rajiv chowk to Medanta hospital road. He was without helmet while driving the scooter on the wrong side. During checking, it was also revealed that the insurance of the scooter had expired in 2023.The Gurugram traffic police impounded a scooter with 96 pending challans amounting to Rs 10 lakh in fines on Tuesday. Further examination revealed that one challan had been issued through an e-challan machine, while the remaining challans were generated through camera-based enforcement. The total outstanding fine was Rs 10 lakh.“Most of the challans were related to riding without a helmet, driving without valid insurance, failure to produce a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate and other traffic violations and the scooter was impounded,” said Zonal Officer Rajeev Chowk, ASI Vijay Singh.
