Making her long-awaited return to the action genre with her upcoming film Gandhari, actor Taapsee Pannu hopes to finally satisfy her fans who have been eager to see her take on more action-oriented roles following the success of Baby and Naam Shabana.Pannu, who plays Bani in Gandhari, said audiences had been urging her for years to return to the action genre. However, the actor deliberately stayed away from the genre, citing the physical demands involved in performing action sequences.”Since Baby and Naam Shabana, people have been after me to do action but I’ve been avoiding it because it takes a lot of physical effort for me to do action. First of all, I don’t enjoy hitting people physically. Even though my image says otherwise. I generally don’t like hitting people. I’m a non-violent person that way,” said Pannu on the sidelines of the ongoing Jagran Film Festival in New Delhi. The 39-year-old actor also noted that the films she typically works in do not always have the budgets for high tech action. “My films generally don’t have the budget to have face replacement or the easy green-screen action. I have to do everything myself. So it can become physically very taxing,” she said.Besides the physical demands, the idea of simply repeating her earlier action roles did not appeal her. “I wanted to do action that takes it a level above what I’ve done before. Only then is it worth attempting action again. So I’ve tried doing that. I hope the audience is satisfied and likes this as much or more than what they’ve seen me doing before,” she explained.Gandhari, directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, follows a mother driven by a fierce determination to protect her child. Pannu also spoke about her distinctive creative equation with Dhillon, with whom she has collaborated on films including Manmarziyaan, Haseen Dillruba, Rashmi Rocket and Dobaaraa.Asked what makes their collaboration work and whether she has a certain level of trust when Dhillon brings her a script, Pannu said their process is collaborative from the outset. “She comes with me with a script that’s basically just a storyline and screenplay. Puri script toh likhi jaati hai baad mein (The complete script is written afterwards),” Pannu said. She explained how Dhillon takes her feedback on the story into account before developing the full screenplay. “I don’t tell her, ‘Write this’ or ‘Don’t write that’. I tell her what I liked and not liked about the script and the story. And then she writes the whole script keeping that in mind and keeping me in mind. That’s why the collaborative output is the way you see it,” she added. The Delhi chapter of Jagran Film Festival will come to a close on Jattvibeday.
