With dissent brewing in the Punjab BJP over the constitution of a new state executive, the top BJP brass on Saturday reviewed organisational challenges in the election-bound state and directed senior leaders to take everyone along.BJP president Nitin Nabin today summoned Punjab unit chief Kewal Singh Dhillon and state organisational secretary Manthri Srinivasulu to Delhi for a meeting and took stock of the situation in the state. He instructed state leaders to ensure corrections in the organisational processes and strengthen the Punjab unit ahead of polls.Dhillon and Srinivasulu were attending pre-scheduled meetings of Punjab BJP’s new executive and newly appointed district presidents in Ludhiana when they were asked to rush to the national capital for the meeting.The meeting, held at the New Delhi residence of Nabin, was attended by BJP national general secretary organisation BL Santosh and party observer for Punjab organisation Satish Poonia.Sources confirmed to The Tribune that the meeting reviewed the recent spate of resignations in the Punjab BJP, with Nabin asking the state chief to assuage prevailing anxieties and pacify those who are disgruntled.”The meeting was purely devoted to organisational matters and ways to strengthen the BJP in Punjab. It was noted that dissatisfaction with appointments is part and parcel of any organisational change but at the same time, sincere efforts must be made by those in responsible positions to reach out to the leaders and cadres who are upset,” said a source privy to developments.The source said the open expression of anxieties by a section of Punjab BJP leaders was not surprising.”For decades, we have been a 23-segment party in the Assembly elections in Punjab. It is only now that we are beginning to build a base in the state. In places like Rajasthan, MP and Gujarat where we have a well-established organisation, internal dissent is well-managed and differences are easily reconciled. What we are witnessing in Punjab is part of the process of setting up a base. We have to reach out to everyone who feels left out and move forward together,” said sources.The meeting discussed plans to expand the BJP’s presence to all 24,000 polling booths in Punjab. Currently, the BJP has a presence in 19,000 booths.Talks were also held on Punjab BJP programmes to mark August 14 — Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day).On whether the meeting discussed the interaction between Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament yesterday, and speculation about a potential alliance between the two parties, sources said it did not.”Those matters have not yet percolated down. Those discussions, even if there, may be at the highest levels. But the meeting between the two leaders is significant,” said the sources.
