Early trends from the high-stakes Kerala Assembly election counting indicate a massive wave in favour of the United Democratic Front (UDF) across the state. As counting progresses, UDF candidates are currently leading in 95 constituencies, leaving the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) struggling to maintain its foothold. In a stunning blow to the incumbent government, 14 cabinet ministers are currently facing potential defeat.LDF’s hopes for continuity diminishThe LDF, which entered the fray with the slogan of “governance continuity”, is currently leading in only 39 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is ahead in four constituencies. The most significant takeaway from the early trends is the visible struggle of top-tier leadership. In a major upset, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is facing a tough challenge in his home turf of Dharmadom. The Dharmadom shock: CM trailingIn what was long considered an impregnable Left fortress, Congress candidate VP Abdul Rasheed has secured a surprising lead against the Chief Minister. In the initial stages, Rasheed led by 733 votes. By the end of the second round, his lead surged to 2,523 votes. The fact that the Chief Minister is trailing in the Communist heartland has sent shockwaves through the LDF camps. While the LDF leadership maintains optimism that the Chief Minister will recover his lead as more rounds are counted, the UDF is already projecting this as a historic political victory. For Abdul Rasheed, securing leads even in LDF-governing panchayats is being viewed as a monumental achievement, regardless of the final tally. With several LDF ministers staring at defeat and the statewide tally tilting heavily toward the opposition, the political landscape of Kerala appears to be shifting decisively in favor of the UDF.
