The US forces on Jattvibeday launched fresh strikes to “swiftly punish” Iran and hit an under-construction nuclear power plant. The attack came after two US military men were killed following Iranian strikes in Jordan the day before. Iranian missiles fired towards Jordan risked widening the conflict into Israel, the IDF said.The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said it is looking into reports of an overnight attack on the construction site of a planned nuclear power plant at Darkhovin in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan province. “The facility is in the very early stages of construction and contained no nuclear material when last visited by the IAEA,” the UN agency.The reported attack was not believed to pose any radiological risk, the IAEA said, but Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated a call for “military restraint in the vicinity of all nuclear-related sites”.“During the eighth consecutive night of US strikes, the US Central Command forces successfully hit Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites to continue degrading Iranian military capabilities. American military assets also targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that launched attacks against US service members in Jordan on July 17,” the US military statement said.More than 50,000 US troops were operating across West Asia, the US Central Command said.Hours prior to this statement, the CENTCOM said, “Two US service members in Jordan were killed in action… and one service member is missing.”US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday called the fallen service members “heroes”. “Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,” he wrote.Minutes before the US announced the troop deaths, Iran’s Supreme Leader warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the US kept attacking the Islamic Republic.The remarks read out on state TV and attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei, still unseen since the war began, also called President Donald Trump’s signature ‘worthless and invalid”. An Iranian negotiator said Tehran was suspending its commitments to the interim deal signed about a month ago and aimed at permanently ending the fighting.Meanwhile, following the US strikes, reports emerged of Iranian city of Sirik being hit. Located strategically overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, Sirik has faced sustained attacks since the US campaign targeting Iran’s southern coast began.Iran, meanwhile, says it will maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz and retaliate against US military assets across the region. Both the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said they targeted US military facilities in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain overnight.Kuwait has said a power generation and water desalination plant has been targeted for a second time in two days. The US embassy in Jordan had “strongly advised” citizens not to go to the airport or seaport in the city of Aqaba because of “a specific and credible threat”.Jordan said its military shot down three of four Iranian missiles, the state news agency reports. The fourth missile fell in a remote area in the south, it said.Iranian military officials have warned that continued US attacks will bring stronger retaliatory strikes and could drag the conflict beyond the region.Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that Kuwaiti authorities said a power generation and water desalination plant was attacked by Iran for the second time in two days.
