In a major embarrassment, a local decorated weightlifter named Kritika has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for using a banned substance. The NADA has issued a nation-wide list featuring 79 players, who have been provisionally suspended for allegedly using performance enhancing substance.Perhaps, it will be the first case reported from the city, where a decorated female weightlifter has been provisionally suspended under Article 2.1 and 2.2 (Nature of Anti-Doping Rule Violation) for allegedly taking Clomifene—a prohibited substance. Though the representatives of the local associations claimed her to be registered with some a neighbouring state, she recently bagged gold medal representing Panjab University in the North Zone Inter University Meet, silver in All India Meet, and another silver in Asmita League, organised by the local Chandigarh association. She is said to be a student of a local college. “During the championship, I was suffering with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and took the medicine. I was not aware about the presence of banned substance and it shocking for me as well,” said Kritika. As per Article 2.1 of NADA, the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolites or markers in an athlete’s sample covers (2.1.1) athletes’ personal duty to ensure that no Prohibited Substance enters their bodies. Accordingly, it is not necessary that intent, Fault, negligence or knowing Use on the Athlete’s part be demonstrated in order to establish an antidoping rule violation under Article 2.1. As an exception to the general rule of Article 2.1, the Prohibited List, International Standards, or Technical Documents may establish special criteria for reporting or the evaluation of certain Prohibited Substances. Clomifene is said to work as a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) that allegedly used as anabolic steroids. In 2024–2025, NADA handed a two-year ban to athlete Summy Kaliraman after she tested positive for taking clomifene. As per the NADA verdicts, if banned, the support staff of the player suspended provisionally may also receive a ban.
