With the escalating situation in West Asia dominating global diplomatic attention, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday joined high-level deliberations with European Union foreign ministers in Cyprus, where discussions focused on the geopolitical fallout of the conflict and its wider regional implications.Jaishankar attended the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, known as the Gymnich meeting, in Limassol as a special invitee at the invitation of European Union High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. The ministerial discussions focused extensively on the evolving security and political situation in West Asia, amid growing international concerns over regional instability and its impact on global strategic and economic interests. On the sidelines of the meeting, Jaishankar held a series of bilateral engagements with senior global leaders, including EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno. The meetings provided an opportunity to exchange views on the West Asia conflict, the Ukraine war, India-EU cooperation and broader regional developments.Jaishankar also called on Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, where the two sides reviewed the growing momentum in bilateral relations following the Cypriot President’s landmark state visit to India earlier this month.India and Cyprus had during that visit elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership, reflecting New Delhi’s growing strategic engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union.According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions between Jaishankar and President Christodoulides focused on expanding cooperation in trade and investment, connectivity, defence and security, technology, innovation and people-to-people ties. The External Affairs Minister’s visit is being viewed as part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach towards Europe and key regional stakeholders at a time of intensifying geopolitical churn across West Asia, Europe and the Indo-Pacific.The visit also reinforced India’s deepening engagement with the European Union and underlined the expanding scope of the India-EU strategic partnership.
