THE music world is in mourning following the news that country icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.
But behind the dazzling sequins, the towering wigs, and the global superstardom, Dolly’s heart always belonged to just one man: her fiercely private husband, Carl Dean.

FAREWELL DOLLY
Moment ITV newsreader fights back tears announcing Dolly Parton’s death
For decades, he stayed true to his roots, running a successful asphalt-paving company in Nashville.
His down-to-earth nature and complete disinterest in fame were exactly what kept Dolly grounded throughout her record-breaking career.
Carl was famously unbothered by her celebrity status.
How did Carl and Dolly meet?
The couple’s paths first crossed outside a Nashville laundromat on the very first day an 18-year-old Dolly arrived in Music City to chase her singing dreams.
Carl drove by in his pickup truck, stopped, and struck up a conversation with the aspiring star.
Recalling that life-changing first meeting, Dolly later shared: “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me).
“He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”
Two years later, on May 30, 1966, they tied the knot in a private, low-key ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, far from flashing cameras and press attention.
When did Carl Dean die?
Carl died in Nashville, Tennessee, in March 2025 at the age of 82.
His death marked the end of an era for the couple, who had enjoyed a long, happy, and stable marriage, remaining devoted to one another for nearly 60 years.
Following his death, Dolly took to social media to pay a rare public tribute to her lifelong partner.
She wrote: “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together.
“Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”
How did Carl inspire Jolene?
Although Carl preferred to stay out of the limelight, his presence was woven into Dolly’s music, most famously inspiring her classic, career-defining hit Jolene.
In 2008, the singer revealed to US media that the track was actually based on a true story about a local bank teller who had developed an obvious crush on her husband.
Dolly noticed the flirtation and channelled her mild jealousy into a musical masterpiece.
Without Carl, the world might never have been gifted one of the greatest country songs of all time.
