A woman doctor reportedly died under mysterious circumstances at her house in Kewal Vihar in Jalandhar on Wednesday, with her father levelling allegations against her husband of having an extramarital affair, indulging in domestic violence and taking unauthorised loan of Rs 2.5 crore in her name. The victim Dr Meenakshi Sood was posted as a PCMS doctor in the Civil Hospital Kapurthala and was married to Dr Piyush Sood, an eye surgeon and owner of National Eye Care Hospital here. The couple married in 2018, but had separated last year. Dr Meenakshi was found lying on the floor of her house after the police broke open windows of the house to enter her room. She had not been responding to the doorbell or phone calls of her maid, who had come to feed her two dogs. The mother of the victim has alleged that her daughter had been murdered, but the police have so far registered a case of abetment to suicide against Dr Piyush Sood, who is at large.A case under Section 106 of the BNS has been lodged against him at the Division No. 6 police station. The postmortem was done at the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, on Thursday afternoon to know the exact cause of the death.Parmod Kumar, father of the victim, who hails from Fazilka, alleged that their daughter had, in 2023, uncovered the illicit relationship of her husband with a hospital staffer. She had laid her hands on the CCTV footage and had even shared the video with her parents. “We wanted her husband to reconcile. So, we counselled and warned him against any such act in future,” he said.He added, “My daughter had even helped her husband set up his private eye care hospital by raising Rs 45 lakh loan from her salary. But she was shattered when in December 2023, she discovered the extramarital relationship of her husband. I have shared with the police the CCTV footage of an intimate scene between them within the hospital premises which my daughter had then shared with me. Since then, he had been conspiring to eliminate my daughter. He had even tried to strangulate her and was indulging in domestic violence. Since July 2025, my daughter had started living separately.”He further added, “Since my daughter was living in a rented accommodation, it was last month that she planned to purchase her own house. She went to bank to apply for home loan and to her shock, she was told that the CIBIL records showed that there was already a Rs 2.5-crore loan taken in her name. My daughter had never taken any loan and it came out to be a fraud committed by her husband. At this, my daughter sought mutual divorce from her husband on the grounds that he paid her back all the dues, including Rs 2.5 crore loan and Rs 45 lakh loan, that she had earlier repaid. But he had started threatening her.”ASI Satpal Singh, investigating the matter, said a case had been lodged and further probe would be conducted on the basis of the postmortem report and other evidences available.
