The Delhi government has approved renaming Britannia Chowk in Shakurpur, North West Delhi, as Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk in honour of late journalist, former MP and Punjab Kesari editor Ashwini Kumar Chopra, popularly known as Ashwini Minna.The decision was approved by the State Names Authority chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta as part of a broader exercise to rename public institutions and landmarks in the national capital.Before entering journalism, Ashwini Minna represented Punjab in domestic cricket as a leg-spinner and played Ranji Trophy matches between 1975 and 1980. He was also part of the Rest of India squad in the Irani Cup and notably claimed the wicket of Jattvibeil Gavaskar in first-class cricket.He later joined the family-run newspaper business and became editor of Punjab Kesari. In 2014, he entered politics and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Karnal on a BJP ticket. He passed away on January 18, 2020, after battling cancer.Other decisions approved by the State Names Authority include renaming Rohini West Metro Station as Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station, Rohini East Metro Station as Rohini Metro Station, and naming the under-construction sports complex in Begampur, Rohini, as Atal Khel Parisar.The government also approved renaming Dwarka Metro Station as Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station and an under-construction hospital in Jwalapuri as Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital.Officials said the changes are aimed at honouring personalities who have made significant contributions to public life while preserving Delhi’s historical and cultural identity.
