The classic fairytale ‘Cinderella’ has been given a desi twist for the largest-scale British-Indian pantomime of its kind, set to begin its UK-wide theatrical run next week.‘Surinderella’ adds a spin on the story of an orphan girl whose dreary life is transformed by a fairy godmother, blending Bhangra beats and family-friendly comedy.Staying true to the audience interaction associated with the traditional British stage pantomime, the new musical by Rifco Theatre Company promises a hilarious reworking of a familiar story through a contemporary British Indian lens.“We’ve always loved the ingredients of pantomime, the humour, music and pure spectacle, so with ‘Surinderella’ we’ve added our own masala to the mix,” Pravesh Kumar, Rifco artistic director, said in a statement.“For many British South Asian audiences, it hasn’t always been a tradition they felt connected to, so this is about opening the door wider, introducing new audiences, and celebrating a much-loved British artform in a way that reflects modern Britain,” he said.Set in a vibrant world named ‘Bolly-Woods’, the story follows Surinder, played by Sonya Venugopal, as a spirited young woman overwhelmed by a mountain of chores. She is tormented by her selfie-obsessed, Insta-vlogging stepsisters named Lovely and Bubbly, with Basanti the talking cow her only real ally to turn to.Her paths cross with Prince Kavi, played by actor Rory Dulku, and soon her world is turned upside-down thanks to Devi Godmother, played by Harpz Kaur. A mysterious slipper, a dazzling Bollywood Ball and a whirlwind of mayhem and romance go on to unfold on stage.“‘Surinderella’ is a massive celebration of family, community, and pure theatrical magic. This is a fun-for-all desi panto built for every kind of day or night out,” said Ameet Chana, director of the musical.“Whether you’re planning a day out for the summer holidays with the kids, a big girls’ night out with bubbles to add to the show’s sparkles, or arriving with a full Desi entourage with the whole family and your maasis (aunts) in tow, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Grab your crew and book your tickets now before the clock strikes midnight,” he said.
