Repeated adjournments disrupted Parliament’s proceedings during the monsoon session for the third consecutive day on Wednesday as the Opposition remained firm on its demand of resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, even as Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju in Lok Sabha and JP Nadda in Rajya Sabha said that the government was ready to discuss the NEET-UG paper leak and other issues.Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that Pradhan must resign first for a fair discussion to take place in Parliament.The Lok Sabha also saw sharp exchanges between the Opposition and the government over the police action against students during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav taking on both the ruling party and Speaker Om Birla while demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in the House on the issue.The confrontation unfolded after Opposition MPs, dressed in black to observe a “Black Day”, protested against the alleged use of force on students and parliamentarians during the July 20 demonstration.Yadav, while intervening during the protests inside the lower House, accused the Speaker of allowing only the Congress and the government to speak while denying other Opposition parties an opportunity.”This is not an issue concerning the BJP, Congress or Samajwadi Party. This is an issue concerning students. You allowed him (KC Venugopal) and him (Kiren Rijiju) to speak. Have you reached some kind of understanding between them,” Yadav said, asking why he had not been allowed to speak after Congress MP KC Venugopal and Rijiju.Escalating his attack, the Samajwadi Party chief alleged that students protesting on the streets had been brutally assaulted. “If students are not heard, they will naturally take to the streets. As for the Education Minister’s resignation, we can secure it whenever we want — even outside this House,” he said.”But the real question is this: what happened to the students? Their hands were broken, their heads were injured and their clothes were torn. Will you even tear the clothes of our daughters,” Yadav asked the treasury benches.Defending the Opposition’s march towards the Prime Minister’s residence, Yadav said it became necessary because the Speaker refused to listen inside Parliament. “Honourable Speaker, we were compelled to march towards the Prime Minister’s residence. Had you heard us in the House, we would not have gone there,” he said.Yadav also questioned why the Prime Minister could speak about the concerns of the youth outside Parliament but was not willing to make a statement in the House.Earlier, Venugopal raised the issue of paper leak and police brutality on students in the Lok Sabha, while Kharge raised them in the Upper House.Rijiju, speaking in Lok Sabha, said that the duration and the format of the debate would be decided in consultation with the floor leaders of all parties.Meanwhile Pradhan later in the day met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla soon after the government told the Lok Sabha that it is willing to hold a detailed discussion on the NEET paper leak issue. The government had urged Speaker Birla to convene a meeting of all parties to decide on the rule, date and duration of the debate.Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were adjourned for the day after the House reconvened at 2 pm after two adjournments. The Rajya Sabha too was adjourned for the day at 2 pm after repeated adjournments.
