Amid a heightened security alert over a suspected plan by the Pakistan-based Shahzad Bhatti network to target military installations in Punjab, anti-sabotage teams of the Amritsar Police today carried out extensive searches around sensitive military and strategic locations in the city.The searches were conducted outside the Army cantonment at Khasa, the Air Force Station, Vallah, ITBP installations and other parts of Amritsar as part of intensified security measures following a sensitive intelligence input regarding a possible threat to military establishments in the district.The intelligence input, shared with the Punjab Police and other security agencies, reportedly named two Pakistan-based operatives, identified as Rana Bhai and Malik. It warned of a possible attack on an Army establishment and claimed that reconnaissance of Khasa Cantonment and the Budha Theh military establishment near Beas had already been carried out.The Amritsar rural police have also arrested four drug peddlers allegedly involved in spying for Pakistan-based intelligence agencies and anti-national forces. They were suspected of sharing photographs of Army cantonment areas and Beas with Pakistan-based handlers.Taking no chances, the Amritsar Police deployed anti-sabotage teams to conduct searches and security checks around the sensitive installations. The teams also inspected strategic locations and other vulnerable points in the city.Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh said senior police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police and Assistant Commissioners of Police, led the anti-sabotage teams during the operation.The exercise was aimed at strengthening security arrangements, detecting suspicious activity and ensuring that no potential threat went unnoticed, officials said.Security agencies have maintained heightened vigil across Amritsar in view of the district’s strategic importance and the presence of several key military and security establishments. Further verification of the intelligence input and security assessment of the identified locations are being carried out by the agencies concerned.
