Five days after 33-year-old Twisha Sharma was found dead at her in-laws’ home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area, her family is still awaiting a fresh postmortem, alleging that crucial questions surrounding her death remain unanswered while her body continues to decompose and her accused husband remains absconding.Meanwhile, a Bhopal court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of her absconding lawyer -husband Samarth Singh. The police have intensified action in the suspicious death case involving Noida resident Twisha and announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for information leading to the arrest of Samarth.Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has approached the court seeking a second postmortem, questioning the findings of the first examination conducted at AIIMS, Bhopal. The family alleges that the postmortem report mentioned ante-mortem injuries, including cuts on Twisha’s hands and ears, but did not conclusively establish death by hanging.“We want a fresh postmortem. We are under the same judiciary that granted bail to the mother-in-law in such a heinous crime,” Sharma alleged.Police officials, however, said the postmortem indicated ante-mortem hanging. They also said blood and viscera samples ruled out intoxication.Twisha’s family has alleged that evidence may have been destroyed after her death and accused the police of delaying action in the case.Twisha was found hanging on May 12. According to Madhya Pradesh police officials, AIIMS, Bhopal, informed them about the case after she was brought to the hospital. Her husband and mother-in-law allegedly told the police that they found her hanging from the ceiling of a room.Sharma claimed that the FIR was registered only on May 15, days after the incident. The police have registered a case against Samarth and his family under provisions related to dowry death and cruelty. Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajneesh Kashyap, who is heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed in the case, said investigators were examining allegations of dowry harassment, physical assault and attempts to destroy evidence after Twisha’s death. The case has been registered under Sections 80(2) and 85 of the BNS, pertaining to dowry death and cruelty by husband or relatives.Twisha’s family has also questioned why her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge, was not arrested despite the FIR. The family further alleged influence in the investigation.“The Lokayukta of Madhya Pradesh, Satyendra Singh, is related in some way to the accused family and is using his influence to suppress a fair investigation,” Sharma claimed. The case intensified after purported messages allegedly sent by Twisha before her death surfaced online. In one of the chats, she reportedly wrote: “I am trapped. Can’t talk much. I will call when the time is right.”Her family alleges that Twisha had been facing mental and physical harassment for months after her marriage and had recently decided to leave the relationship.“In her last conversation with her mother, she said she had booked her ticket to come back. Even we did not want her to continue this relationship as she was in a bad condition,” Sharma said.Twisha’s brother, Harshit Sharma, a Major in the Army, has also publicly demanded justice for his sister. The police said Twisha and Samarth Singh met through a dating app in 2024 and got married in December 2025.According to her family, Twisha had initially planned to move to London before entering the relationship.“She wanted to go to London, but then she met this man on a dating app. Since she was sure about him, we agreed. But since the honeymoon trip, they had been tormenting her,” her father alleged.Twisha was an MBA graduate, former Miss Pune and marketing professional. On her LinkedIn profile, she described herself as “a dynamic professional” with experience as a marketing manager in the restaurant industry. She wrote that she had explored acting and filmmaking, played lead roles in advertisements and regional films, and worked as a certified yoga trainer and Vipassana meditator. Her profile also stated that she had been working remotely from Delhi for DADB, the German Academy of Digital Education, for the past year and had studied at NMIMS Global in 2024.Her father also claimed that she had appeared in advertisements for Dove and L’Oréal.According to the family, Twisha had undergone a medical termination of pregnancy nearly a week before her death.Meanwhile, the defence has denied allegations of harassment and murder. In her bail application, Giribala Singh claimed that Twisha was dependent on narcotic substances and suffered from emotional distress. The plea alleged that her behaviour changed after marriage and further deteriorated after she learnt she was pregnant during a hospital visit in April. The application also alleged that Twisha experienced frequent mood swings and symptoms linked to withdrawal.Twisha’s family has strongly denied the allegations levelled against her.Sharma also accused Samarth Singh of substance abuse and alleged that he had earlier been caught in a drug-related matter.Twisha’s family staged a protest outside the residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, demanding a court-monitored probe and a fresh postmortem.Speaking on the protest, Katara Hills SHO Jattvibeil Kumar Dubey said the investigation was already underway.“This is unethical because they did not take permission for protest. We have been saying from the first day that they must peacefully give all their queries one by one and we will conduct an investigation on this,” he said. With both families making sharply opposing claims, investigators are now examining medical findings, digital evidence and statements.
