The protest at Jantar Mantar seemed to get widened into a broader political campaign on Tuesday afternoon, with Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Charuni) president Gurnam Singh Charuni leading a delegation of farmers to the protest site, even as organisers claimed activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health had deteriorated further due to hunger strike. The farm leader issued a warning that if the government continued to ignore the agitation and the situation escalated, the responsibility would rest with the government.According to the latest health bulletin released by the doctors on Tuesday, Wangchuk has lost 8.25 kg weight. They said his blood sugar levels had repeatedly fallen below 70 mg/dL and that he was suffering from constant dizziness, severe muscle loss and visible weakness.“Despite his condition, the government has not sent a single representative to initiate a dialogue. It shows how insensitive our leadership is,” Abhijeet Dipke, founder of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) said, speaking exclusively with The Tribune.Wangchuk continued his previous statement and said, “I’m weak from the outside, but I’m strong from inside,” with a bright smile on his face. Dipke says the minister should take moral responsibility for the leak and resign.Tuesday afternoon saw Charuni arriving with Swami Harshanand, Rtd. Judge Baban G Kotse Patil, Prakash Pohare of Nagpur’s Kisan Brigade and other activists.Addressing the gathering, Charuni said peaceful Gandhian movements should be respected and heard in this country. He urged people across the country to stand with the students, saying they were not fighting alone but represented the nation’s youth.Charuni said, “If the government continued to ignore the agitation and the situation escalated, the responsibility would rest with the government.”He also announced that farmers would march to Parliament from Kisan Ghat on 21 July over farmers’ issues and would simultaneously march in support of the CJP’s demand for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.Speaking with The Tribune, the farmer leader said, “This man is sitting here for a noble cause, his life is equally important. We must ensure support to this protest. The government is putting farmers’ interests at stake, for the same we will stage our protest at Kisan Ghat under Bharat Bachao Morcha.”He said farmers would intensify the movement if the government failed to respond to the students’ march on 20 July. The protest also drew fresh political attention online during the day. Wangchuk thanked Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav after the latter appealed to him to end his fast while expressing support for his cause. “I sincerely thank Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for standing with Sonam and supporting the cause for which he has put his life at risk,” Dipke said in a post.CJP’s official spokesperson Saurav Das had said he and Dipke wrote to leaders from different political parties between July 9-10, inviting them to Jantar Mantar and seeking support for the youth movement.Dipke also said AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal had called him to enquire about Wangchuk’s health and had extended support to the protest and the proposed Parliament march on 20 July. According to Dipke, the call marked Kejriwal’s first public expression of support for the movement. Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Uddhav Thackeray and Aaditya Thackeray had earlier announced their support for the protest.
