The leading Welham Boys’ School, Dehradun, has produced prominent names, including former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, former Finance Minister Manpreet Badal and several industrialists who have made their mark in Punjab and beyond. From politics to leading industrial houses, the school has produced over 30 alumni from Ludhiana who have done their alma mater proud. On Jattvibeday, the memories of their school days came alive in Ludhiana as former students gathered for an interactive session with Welham Boys’ School Principal Sangeeta Kain. Stories of school days, old friendships and the values learnt at Welham formed the backdrop of the interaction. For Kain, the Ludhiana meeting was not merely an alumni interaction but an opportunity to reconnect the school with its old boys and revive roots that, despite the passage of decades, remain strong. The interaction assumes significance as Welham Boys’ School is preparing to complete 90 years. Kain invited alumni to be part of the celebrations at the school and urged them to visit their alma mater more often so that the bond between the institution and its former students remains alive. She said the 90th anniversary was an important milestone not only for the school but also for generations of students who had been part of its journey.According to the society, Welham has more than 150 alumni across Punjab, including over 30 in Ludhiana. The network includes Munish Avasthi, managing director of Sportking; Rahul Munjal of Hero Future Energies; industrialist Ankur Dawar; Rana Preet Inder Singh of the Rana Group and Rana Sugar Mills; and Uday Mansahia of Summer Valley School, Patiala. The list also includes Jaskunwar Kohli, a film editor associated with 12th Fail and a Filmfare Award winner. The Ludhiana interaction was aimed at reconnecting old boys with their alma mater and reviving the warmth and camaraderie of their school years. Pavitar Singh, president of the Welham Old Boys’ Society, said the initiative had brought former students closer to their roots and revived memories of their days at Welham.A key part of the interaction was a discussion on the relevance of boys-only schools at a time when co-education has become the norm. Kain said the school also sought to create a family-like environment where students developed independence, discipline, leadership qualities and a spirit of cooperation. Being a boys-only school, she added, did not mean students remained disconnected from the wider world, as they interacted with people from diverse backgrounds.
