At the Met Gala 2026, where global celebrities typically dominate headlines with dramatic couture, Indian royalty made a striking impression with a celebration of heritage and craftsmanship.Princess Gauravi Kumari of Jaipur and Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh stepped onto one of fashion’s most prestigious platforms, bringing with them a powerful representation of Rajasthani culture reimagined through contemporary design.Gauravi Kumari chose a soft pink chiffon saree originally from the collection of her grandmother, Maharani Gayatri Devi. The heritage piece was reinterpreted into a modern gown by designer Prabal Gurung, blending nostalgia with high fashion. The look was elevated with pearls from Jaipur’s The Gem Palace, paired with rubies and uncut diamonds, reinforcing a regal aesthetic rooted in tradition. Her appearance served as both a fashion statement and a tribute to Maharani Gayatri Devi’s enduring legacy, with the pearls and delicate drape echoing classic royal elegance.Sawai Padmanabh Singh, who became the titular Maharaja of Jaipur in 2011, opted for a richly detailed ensemble designed by Prabal Gurung. His midnight blue velvet Phulgar coat reportedly required around 600 hours of intricate craftsmanship, featuring a blend of cotton, zardozi, aari embroidery, and resham and dabka work.He paired the coat with tailored black trousers subtly inspired by Jaipur’s architectural heritage. A mirror sun motif, drawn from the City Palace’s Sri Niwas, symbolized his Suryavanshi lineage. Completing the look were traditional jadau and polki jewellery pieces closely associated with Jaipur’s famed Johri Bazaar.Together, the royal duo highlighted Rajasthan’s textile heritage and jewellery craftsmanship on an international platform, aligning seamlessly with the Met Gala 2026 theme “Costume Art” and the dress code “Fashion Is Art.”
