Matterface, who returned to work just days after delivering a poignant live tribute to his late father, admitted that the loss was made even harder by not having the chance to say a proper farewell.

He wrote: “Saying goodbye is never easy. Never getting to say those words is even harder.

“Hopefully you understood how much you meant to us Dad.”

Matterface is regularly heard commentating on England for ITV as well as for TNT Sports‘ coverage of the Premier League and Champions League, and on the radio.

The 48-year-old also revealed his family had laid his father to rest in the moving statement.

He added: “Yesterday, we laid our Dad to rest. A big thank you to everyone who came and paid tribute to him and helped celebrate his life.”

Matterface said the family tried to honour his dad in a way that reflected his personality.

He continued: “We tried to celebrate him, to make it as joyful as possible because he tried to do that for so many.”

He concluded in the message: “As a family, we have been very lucky to have so many great people to lean on during this time. Partners, friends, colleagues, kids, old friends, and neighbours. Thank you.”
