With vast swathes of India in the grip of heatwave and the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed to contain forest fires in Kasauli, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today warned citizens of the dangers of severe heat, urging all possible precautions. Not only did the Prime Minister issue a rare public appeal on X, asking people to stay hydrated, check on one another and be extra compassionate to birds and animals, he later today directed Cabinet colleagues to adopt a “whole-of-nation” response to the challenge. At midday today, global platform AQI.in reported that 45 of the world’s hottest cities were in India. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has meanwhile predicted severe heatwave conditions for five days.”This heat is harsh on all of us. I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Stay hydrated, carry water when stepping out, offer a glass to others. In a weather like this, kindness goes a long way,” PM Modi said on X.He asked everyone to be watchful of signs of heat exhaustion — dizziness, nausea and extreme fatigue.”If someone around you feels unusually unwell, move them to a shaded place, ensure they get water, ORS. Children, elderly and those working outdoors are especially vulnerable in extreme heat. Ignoring warning signs can lead to heatstroke. In such weather, timely care and attention go a long way,” the PM advised asking everyone to check on elderly parents and grandparents.Later in the day, the PM told Cabinet colleagues to take steps to mitigate the heatwave impact.”The prime minister said all ministries must take steps to protect people from heatwave, especially ministries such as health and water resources, and consider what measures can be taken. He was clear that such major challenges should be addressed through a whole-of-nation approach, with the Centre, states and citizens working together,” Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.Union Ministries will draft plans for the purpose and the Centre is in touch with state governments, said Vaishnaw.
