The case caused outrage from politicians and the public, following the judge’s lenient decision to hand the perpetrators non-custodial sentences.

Two 15-year-old boys were given three-year Youth Rehabilitation Orders for raping two girls and filming the attacks.

A third boy, now aged 14, was also sentenced to an 18-month rehabilitation order for his involvement in the second atatck.

Southampton Crown Court heard both victims were “significantly outnumbered” and suffered prolonged ordeals.

The Attorney General Lord Hermer has now referred the sentences to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.

Hermer said there was “an epidemic of violence against women and girls in this country”, announcing the case would be referred following a public outcry.

Last week, the first victim, now 16, slammed the judge’s decision to spare them jail.

Now, the second victim, who was 14 at the time of the brutal attack, said it felt like she “was being punished for something that wasn’t my fault”.

During the trial, the court heard how she was cornered by one of the boys, threatened with a knife and ordered to leave her mobile phone and an AirTag tracking device.

The court heard she was then forced to walk to a field near Fordingbridge recreation ground in Hampshire.

There, one of the defendants pushed her to the ground and cut her clothes, then raped her.

The boys filmed the horrifying attack on their phones, later sharing some of this footage online.

A clip recovered from one of their phones showed the 14-year-old victim lying still on the ground with “her face buried in her hands”.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight, the girl bravely questioned: “Why would you avoid criminalising someone who has done a criminal act?”

She revealed how the trauma of the attack stays with her, adding she gets “vivid flashbacks”.

“I feel like no matter what I do, I can always feel their hands on me, no matter how much I’ve scrubbed, how much I’ve tried to get the feeling away it’s always there and it just doesn’t feel like my body anymore,” she said.

“I get really vivid, vivid flashbacks, but they can come at random times, any place, anywhere, sometimes without triggers as well.”

In his sentencing of the attackers, Judge Nicholas Rowland said he wanted to “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily”.

He also praised the rapists for having “done very well with the restrictions put in place throughout the trial”.

But the teenage victim told The Times the sentencing means she is now terrified of leaving the house.

She said: “It just felt like I was being punished for something that wasn’t my fault because it just means I can’t go out

“I just wanted to be able to go out without the fear of seeing them or being around them.

“I just kind of thought, well why did I go through all of that for nothing to come of it? Why did I put myself through that much? To have to deal with this for the rest of my life with them being right, it wasn’t really fair.”

The courageous victim said she has lost her potential after the attack and the toll of the court case and sentencing.

Currently sitting her GCSEs, she said she has “fallen quite far behind” and may have to start college a year later than anticipated.

“I do want a future. It’s just hard to see where I can end up. I’m still worried,” she added.

A police investigation after the girl’s attack found there was another victim, aged 15 at the time, who had been raped by the two older boys in November 2024.

The “petrified” girl was raped by the two 14-year-old boys in a horrific 90-minute ordeal in an underpass.

Last week, she spoke out on Newsnight to say the sentence felt like a “rock straight in my face”.

Writing on social media before the appeal was granted, the Prime Minister previously said the rape case was “appalling”.

The PM wrote: “This is a harrowing and brave testimony.

“The girls at the heart of this case have shown extraordinary bravery and strength in heinous circumstances.

“This is an appalling case and it is right that law officers are urgently reviewing the sentences.”

Judge Nicholas Rowland said the boys were “very young”, had low intelligence, had a “limited understanding of consent”, and were susceptible to “peer pressure”.

The judge added: “I think of you as very young and none of you have been in any big trouble before.

“You have all done very well with the restrictions put in place throughout the trial.”

One of the 15-year-old boys was found guilty of one charge of rape while the other was convicted of three charges of rape in connection with the first attack in November.

The first defendant was also found guilty of one count of rape and the second defendant convicted of three charges of rape in connection with the second incident in January.

The youngest defendant, now aged 14, was found guilty of two charges of rape by encouraging the second defendant in the January incident.

The first defendant was also found guilty of taking indecent photos of a child and the second defendant previously pleaded guilty to four charges of taking indecent photos of a child.
