Carrick lodged papers in March for a judge at the Court of Appeal to hear his application.
It is believed to relate to his most recent life term last November for abusing a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s.
No date for the appeal has yet been set and it is likely to take six months before his case is heard.
It will go before a judge at London’s Royal Courts of Justice who will decide if it can progress.
The Criminal Appeal Office confirmed it was “in the early stages of the appeal process”.
Carrick, of Stevenage, Herts, was an armed cop with the Met Police.
