Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife Dr Gurpreet Kaur has sent a legal notice to the journalist in Doordarshan News as well as former judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, Justice Ranjit Singh (retd), and demanded an unconditional written apology from them for levelling “false, malicious and defamatory” allegations against her in connection with a news story claiming that she was instrumental in letting off a rape accused for a certain sum of money.Reacting to this, the former judge on Monday said he was not afraid of any notice sent by Dr Gurpreet Kaur.The notice was sent to Bhawna Nair, anchor of Doordarshan News, and the retired judge on August 22 by advocate Anisha. The news channel has been asked to immediately remove all defamatory content and the former judge has been asked to publish a clear unconditional apology.The notice, made public on Monday, asks the former judge and the journalist to tender an apology within 24 hours of receiving it.Referring to the allegations levelled by the former judge during a press conference on August 20, the notice described them as false and malicious and made without verifying facts. The allegations were aired by DD News.Addressing a press conference on Monday, Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) said instead of replying to the notice, he would contest the case in the court and reveal all facts related to it.He said this would not only expose the persons directly concerned but also many others. The former judge said he would continue to raise his voice for seeking justice for victims of human rights violations.He denied filing any complaint before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking an inquiry into allegations against Dr Gurpreet Kaur. On August 22, the NHRC issued notices to the Punjab Chief Secretary and the DGP to inquire into allegations levelled by the former judge and submit an action taken report within two weeks.PHRO senior advocate RS Bains, who was accompanying the retired judge, said whatever Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) said was based on official documents and court proceedings.
