The AAP gained a majority in Ropar and Anandpur Sahib municipal councils, while Congress, led by former CM Chanrajit Singh Channi, maintained its dominance in Chamkaur Sahib and Morinda municipal councils in the results declared on Friday.In Kiratpur Sahib Nagar Panchayat, independents won in the majority, while the AAP won as the single largest party. The move was resisted by AAP workers, which led to a clash. A large police force was deployed outside the counting centre to maintain peace.Ropar MCIn Ropar MC, the AAP gained a majority by winning 12 out of 21 wards. The BJP marked its presence, winning four wards, while SAD won three wards and one seat was won by an independent.The Congress, which had a majority in the last Ropar MC house, managed to win just one seat.Sources blamed infighting for the dismal performance of Congress. Congress had managed to field just 14 out of 21 wards of Ropar MC.Chamkaur Sahib and Morinda MC’sIn Chamkaur Sahib MC, the Congress managed to win a majority. The party won seven out of 13 wards in Chamkaur Sahib MC, while the AAP managed to win three wards, and three went to independents.In Morinda MC, the Congress dominated, winning 10 out of 15 wards. Independents won four wards while the AAP managed to win just one ward.Both Chamkaur Sahib and Morinda MCs fall in the Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency, which was earlier represented by former CM Charanjit Singh Channi. The Congress has swept the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls, also held recently in Chamkaur Sahib.Anandpur Sahib MCThe AAP dominated Anandpur Sahib MC polls, winning 11 out of 13 wards. The Congress had not contested the Anandpur Sahib MC elections on a symbol.Harjeet Singh Jeeta, former MC president, and his wife both won as AAP councilors from Anandpur Sahib. Harjeet Singh Jeeta was earlier a Congress leader but had switched loyalties and was now a close confidante of Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains.Kiratpur Sahib Nagar PanchayatIn Kiratpur Sahib Nagar Panchayat, the independent won six wards, while the AAP won four wards, and one ward went to SAD. Here, the Congress had not contested the election symbol.
