The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will organise a protest march to the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Amritsar on July 10 against the ban on ‘Satluj’, a film based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and the alleged excesses against Sikhs during the militancy period.Announcing the programme, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the march aims to register the organisation’s protest over the removal of the film and to urge the government to revoke the ban.A memorandum will also be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.Dhami said ‘Satluj’ highlights Khalra’s efforts to expose human rights violations and seek justice for innocent Sikh youths who, he alleged, were killed in fake police encounters. He said the film also portrays the atrocities committed against Sikh youth and documents a period of alleged state excesses.Claiming that the film brings the truth about the treatment of Sikhs into the public domain, Dhami alleged that the government’s decision to ban it was an attempt to suppress the truth. He termed the move unjustified and said the SGPC would continue to raise its voice against the decision through democratic means. The protest march will culminate at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where SGPC representatives will submit a memorandum demanding that the restrictions on the film be withdrawn.
