Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Jattvibeday alleged that her convoy was targeted by goons with “big stones, bricks and sticks” that could have “even killed” her in North 24 Parganas, while she was visiting the family of a TMC worker who died in police custody.Banerjee, accompanied by senior TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Dola Sen, was on her way to meet the family of Birju Keot, a TMC worker who died in the custody of West Bengal Police.Her convoy was reportedly intercepted by protesters, who surrounded her vehicle, threw water bottles and footwear, mud and raised slogans.Mamata alleged that “anti-social elements” hurled large stones at her vehicle in the presence of police personnel. “Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police,” she said, alleging that the attack was severe enough to have caused serious injuries had the vehicle windows been open.“The attack on the vehicle was so severe that if the windows had been open, my head would have been smashed. We could have all been killed,” she alleged.She also questioned the role of the police, alleging that security personnel failed to prevent mobs from targeting her convoy.Kalyan alleged that the “attack was carried out by the people of the BJP”.Meanwhile, the BJP has denied any role in the incident and said that the party did not endorse such acts.West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya rejected any link between his party and the incident, saying the BJP did not endorse violence or the throwing of stones, mud or footwear at anyone’s vehicle. “Let me be clear: The BJP has absolutely no connection to the incidents where mud, stones or slippers were thrown at Mamata Banerjee’s vehicle,” Bhattacharya said.He said the BJP would condemn such an incident, irrespective of whether the person targeted was a serving or former chief minister or any other woman leader.Bhattacharya called the episode a conflict between the TMC and sections of the public rather than an incident involving the BJP. “What is happening here is a conflict involving the Trinamool — a clash between the public and the Trinamool,” he said.Bhattacharya also accused the TMC of ignoring “past atrocities” in the state, which he claimed people had not forgotten.TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that although Keot’s name was not mentioned in the FIR, the West Bengal Police picked him up. He further alleged that Keot died in police custody following what he described as “police brutalities”.
