Hundreds gathered in Gurugram today to bid farewell to five members of the Vivek Aggarwal family who perished in the Wednesday inferno at a South Delhi hotel.Among those who cried inconsolably was Prem Bansal, the father-in-law of Vivek Aggarwal, who had gone to the ill-fated Flourish Stay Inn around 8.30 am yesterday to deliver breakfast to his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.“I was right there outside the hotel as it went up in flames. I had arrived with breakfast for my children and found them trapped inside. I could do nothing to save them,” Bansal was heard telling relatives at Moksha Dham in Sector 32, Gurugram, where the sight of five pyres — all burning in a line — overwhelmed one and all. For Bansal, the father of Tarjini Aggarwal, life may well be a story of guilt now.“How will I live now, I just watched them die,” he cried, as hundreds gathered to say a final goodbye to the family that was not supposed to die yet.Bansal broke down on the shoulders of other mourning relatives as tears and shock filled the air. Surviving extended family members of the Aggarwals spoke in hushed tones about the family patriarch — Radhe Shyam Aggarwal — still on a ventilator in the ICU of Max, Saket, and unaware of the tragedy that has befallen his family. It was to tend to Radhe Shyam that Vivek, his wife Tarjini and daughters had checked into Flourish Inn, located at a stone’s throw from the hospital.Bansal, who lives in Sector 102, Gurugram, close to Adani’s Oyster Grand high rise, would bring breakfast for his daughter Tarjini and others every day.Wednesday was meant to be just another day, but it wasn’t.Bansal spoke of how all the deceased had big dreams in life.Vivek Aggarwal (48) was a renowned chartered accountant and director at a local firm. Vivek’s wife Tarjini (43) worked as an event planner.Their daughter Jivisha (20) was pursuing BTech from PES University, Bengaluru, and was in her first year, while the younger one Varya (17) recently took admission to Class XI.Vivek’s mother Hemlata (71) was also cremated today at 4.40 pm along with the four others while “Manor”, the massive home Aggarwals had built in Sector 46, Gurugram, wore a dreary look.Earlier at a condolence meeting, all relatives, who arrived from different cities, gathered to pay tributes to a family they described as jovial and helpful.About Vivek, neighbours said he would always be keen to help and was active in the residents’ welfare association.“He would not hesitate to spend from his pocket if it was for a good cause,” said a neighbour.Tarjini’s uncle Ashok Gupta, meanwhile, said Radhe Shyam continued to be critically ill, according to the hospital.Jivisha’s and Varya’s cousins from the extended family remembered the affection Vivek and Tarjani would shower on them. “They fed me with their own hands like I was their son,” said a cousin of the deceased girls. Those close to the family said Vivek died of suffocation, while the others succumbed to burn injuries. While five people of Vivek’s immediate family were consigned to the flames in Gurugram today, the other three members of his extended family — Vivek’s uncle Ashok, his aunt Kamla Goyal and her husband, Jhaveri Lal Goyal — who died were taken back to Ajmer for the last rites.
