Two Indian Army personnel serving as UN peacekeepers were posthumously honoured for their sacrifice in the line of duty on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed on May 29.Lance Havildar Harbhajan Singh, who served with the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), and Naib Subedar Sujit Kumar Pradhan, deployed with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), were posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for their supreme sacrifice.Guterres also presented the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award to Major Abhilasha Barak of India, who serves with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). She was recognised for her outreach efforts with women and girls during her deployment in Lebanon.The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29 to pay tribute to fallen Blue Helmets who died while serving in UN missions worldwide.In New Delhi, the day was marked with solemn events honouring the dedication and sacrifice of Indian peacekeepers serving under the UN flag.As part of the commemorations, Lt Gen Vipul Shinghal, Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, New Delhi, to pay homage to Indian peacekeepers who made the supreme sacrifice in UN missions.A strategic discussion on the “Future of UN Global Peacekeeping” was also held at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. The event brought together senior military officials, diplomats, and scholars to discuss current peacekeeping challenges, evolving operational needs, and India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping efforts.
