A 50-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was allegedly raped at a churchyard on Saturday night.

Police received a report that the victim had been raped in Maidstone, Kent, between 7pm and 10 pm on May 9.

Kent Police arrested a man from Chatham on Monday following an investigation into the incident.

The woman had met the man earlier in the evening before being allegedly sexually assaulted at two locations in the city.

The alleged incidents happened at a venue in the High Street and near a church in Mill Street.

Police cordoned off the entrance of All Saints Church at around 10.30pm on Saturday.

A cordon was put up around the building, which is one of the largest parish churches in England.

Kent Police arrested a man from Chatham following its investigation into the incident.

He remains in custody while officers continue further enquiries.

The force is calling for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident to contact it by calling 999 and quoting reference 46/73799/25.

A police spokesperson said:” An arrest has been secured following a rape investigation in Maidstone.

“Kent Police received a report at around 10.30pm on Saturday 9 May 2026 that a woman had been raped by a man she met earlier that evening in two town centre locations.

“It is alleged the incidents happened between 7pm and 10pm at a venue in the High Street and near a church in Mill Street.

“A 50-year-old man from Chatham was arrested on Monday 11 May.

“He remains in custody pending further enquiries.

“Anyone with information is urged to call 999, quoting reference 46/73799/25.

“Local residents with private CCTV or drivers with dashcam, who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, are also asked to check for footage.”
